On Tuesday, and Thursday nights, we are open just for teens!
Like with the younger kids, we always start with a hot meal because a hungry belly doesn’t listen! Then we listen to or watch lessons specifically written for older kids. The teens also will split into classrooms where mentors expand on the lesson.
When they leave Rock House Kids for the night, the teens are given a take-home bag of nonperishable, individually wrapped food items. Throughout the year, they will also receive necessities such as hygiene products, school supplies, coats, mittens, hats, sleeping bags, etc.
From time to time local organizations will come in to teach important skills such as filling out job applications, how to interview for a job, or to talk about college and career opportunities
Occasional field trips to local park district facilities help break up the year – our teens have enjoyed swimming at local pools, an indoor trampoline park, weekend camping trips and even learning how to water ski with Rockford’s Ski Broncs team!
Teens who have attended Rock House Kids during the 1st to 6th grades, have the opportunity to be part of our Teen Leadership group. This team of kids have the opportunity to help out with the younger children, assisting in a classroom, serving food, and more. The time they spend helping out is considered volunteer time and they receive monthly memberships to our local YMCA.
